I gotta admit, I’m pretty excited about this movie! As an avid comic book collector, I can tell you the Venom storyline was massively popular when it landing in the 80s, and this movie looks insane!
Sony is bringing Venom to the big screen, and the official trailer landed yesterday. Before you press play on this one though, if you’re spoiler-adverse, I recommend thinking twice…
Tom Hardy takes on the role of Eddie Brock, the investigative journalist who comes into contact with an symbiote, bestowing upon him alien powers which he uses to predictably violent effect.
It’s rumoured that Tom Holland will reprise his role as Spiderman, but there’s no evidence of that in this trailer. Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson also lend their star power to this film.
The movie follows Spider-Man: Homecoming in Sony’s Marvel Universe, but doesn’t cross over with the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Venom is out October 5th
Now, I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but Venom’s main antagonist (after Spiderman) is Carnage, the symbiote supervillain who – as I recall (it’s been a long time since I leafed through a comic book, let me tell you!) – Venom and Spiderman team up to confront! (Carnage, being the result of another symbiote coming in contact with serial killer Cletus Kasady).
I think it’s going to be a big ask to introduce Venom to audiences, then turn around and do the same thing for Carnage. I’m thinking this movie will introduce Venom and his rivalry with Spiderman. Recruiting Tom Hardy should guarantee the success of this film, allowing Sony to roll out a sequel and the Carnage storyline at a later date.
All of this is pure speculation on my part – I’m just excited that this trailer has dropped!
