I’m going to be honest with you – I was totally fooled when I saw the trailer for Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home. I was already making plans for where I was going to see it and with whom, when my wife calmly informed me that, in fact, it’s not actually a movie but a clever advertising campaign for Tourism Australia.

Goddamnit!

I mean, it looks so good! It features a stellar cast of Aussie legends – Hugh Jackman, Margot Robbie, Chris & Liam Hemsworth, Ruby Rose, Russell Crowe, Isla Fisher, Luke Bracey and Jessica Mauboy – the cinematography looks absolutely amazing, and the premise seems more than believable as another Hollywood 80s reboot.

But as the Brisbane Times points out:

Those incredulous reactions to the weekend’s trailer teasing a Crocodile Dundee reboot may have had a point – it all looks to be a viral marketing stunt.

Industry sources have indicated the teaser – featuring US actor Danny McBride – is part of an advertising campaign for Tourism Australia, set to air during next month’s NFL Super Bowl.

The teaser, revealed exclusively by People magazine on Saturday, touted the big-screen return of Paul Hogan’s iconic adventurer, with McBride playing his “loudmouthed American son” Brian Dundee, on a mission to rescue his father who is lost in the Australian outback.

The clip was met with scepticism from certain corners of the industry, with film publications questioning how the shoot for the film – apparently set for release in June – could have flown under the radar.

And that pretty much sums it up. There was no indication at all that there was a script for this movie, let alone a production schedule.

Still, a man can dream, can’t he!?
