Darren Aronofsky produced one of the best movies in the past two decades when he released Requiem for a Dream in the late 90s.

A decade later and he has impressed yet again, this time with the film The Wrestler.

One of the movies of the year in 2008, The Wrestler was nominated for plenty of awards, including Oscar nominations for best film, best actor and best supporting actress.

The film follows the life of Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson, a professional wrestler in the 1980s.

The Rams life was full of excitement and fame in his early years, and was an A-grade celebrity in the industry.

However, by the 1990s his popularity decreases, as too does his quality of life.

Robinson still does the odd show on weekends, in front of mediocre crowds, but during the week he gets by with part time shifts at the local deli.

He is rarely recognized, and when he is it is usually at his expense.

The movie takes the viewers on a journey through the life of a superstar who has the battles of letting go of the only thing he loves so much, and the one thing that has torn apart his family.

Mickey Rourke assumes the role of Robinson and one could not find a more perfect match.

The similarities between both characters are striking, with Rourke also going through a similar experience, only in the acting world.

The Wrestler will make you laugh, and cry, in an emotional rollercoaster.

The film is now out on DVD across the nation.

Fresh from cleaning up at the BAFTAs, The Hurt Locker team is feeling their own pain with controversy surrounding their favouritism at the upcoming Oscar awards.

The highly rated film has been engulfed by controversy after it was revealed one of the producers had broken strict rules on negative campaigning.

Nicolas Chartier, a producer of the film could soon face censure from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after he had reportedly sent emails to thousands of Oscar voters urging them to vote for The Hurt Locker instead of a “$500 million film”.

The Hurt Locker is an independent film about a US bomb unit and one of the first films covering the controversies of the Iraq War.

It has been the clear favourite to win the Oscar for best film, despite the success of the most expensive movie ever made in Avatar.

Chartier’s email was seen as a direct attack at James Cameron, the director of Avatar, and clearly breached the academy rules against negative campaigning.

As a result, Chartier was forced to issue an embarrassing apology for his email, where he described it as “inappropriate and stupid”.

A spokeswoman for the academy declined to comment on what action, if any, might be taken against Chartier.

The Oscar for best film will be revealed at next Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Oscar time is a great time for cinema. But one of the bad things about it is that there are so many good movies to watch that we often miss a few real gems, which manage to get overlooked by the bigger, highly publicized movies.

Precious is one of these films. With the likes of Avatar, The Hurt Locker and Invictus stealing the limelight, the Lee Daniels release has managed to go by under the radar in recent months.

Set in Harlem in the 80s, Precious is the story of Claireece Precious Jones, a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life of pain.

For starters, she is pregnant for the second time by her drug-addicted father. Her life at home is made a nightmare by her abusive mother, a poisonously angry woman who scars her emotionally and physically.

School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks even though she cannot read or write.

The inspiring story of Precious is that while she may sometimes be down, she is never out. Her story speaks of a courageous woman who overcomes adversity to reach greater heights.

Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, a move that will lead on a journey from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

There are few movies which leave an everlasting scar on your memory, and Precious is one of these films… for the right reasons.

Avatar seems to have taken to viewers’ choice of movie of the year, but that decision may have been made a little prematurely, especially considering the release of The Hurt Locker was such a short time ago.

In terms of Oscar betting for the film of the year, it is a two horse race between both movies, but if you ask the public, the winner is a no brainer with Avatar taking the cake.

But, I like to think otherwise.

The Hurt Locker is a movie made from the script of Mark Boal, a freelance writer who was embedded with a bomb squad.

The movie is predominantly about members of the US Army who tour together and contend with defusing bombs, the threat of insurgency, and the tension that develops among them.

The film was shot in the Middle East, largely Jordan, making for a great visual experience and one that allows the viewers to really relate to the events they are witnessing.

Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, and Brian Geraghty all star in the movie, and take up roles as bomb specialists serving their country.

The major plot climaxes near the end when, with only two days left on their tour, two members of the team are called in to assist in a situation where a man was forced to wander into a military checkpoint with a time-bomb strapped to his chest.

The pair can neither remove the bomb nor disarm it in time, and is forced to flee before the bomb goes off.

Without spoiling the end, The Hurt Locker finishes in an explosive bang and really does deliver viewers an action packed experience definitely worth seeing.

The Blind Side is the new film by director John Lee Hancock, which is based on true events of an African American homeless schoolboy.

The very first thing that strikes you when you watch the film is the horrible southern accent performed by Sandra Bullock, who somehow received an Ocsar nomination for her poor efforts.

After a while you soon forget about the accent and begin to be hooked into the storyline of a struggling overweight teenager named Michael Oher, who is accepted into a wealthy, warming family who takes him under their wing.

The movie introduces you to Oher when he is accepted into the school under a footballing scholarship. However, he has no place to stay and spends his first nights on the streets before being taken by Leigh Anne Tuohy (Bullock).

After a bit of time, Oher’s grades begin to improve, his happiness increases and he begins to actually enjoy life.

Finally he is allowed to play football, and while he doesn’t perform too well at the beginning, a few inspiring worlds from Tuohy, saying that his teammates are like family, sees him begin to dominate the competition.

For a movie which has not had too much publicity, it has certainly achieved large amounts of success in America, where it is dominating the Box Office.

The word of mouth from the viewers seems to have been working a treat.

However, in my eyes, the film still lacks a bit of style and extra punch, which I think, is needed to take home any Academy Awards.

But overall, still a solid movie.
