Despite it’s pre-release dramas (online leak, Mexico release delayed due to swine flu, etc), X-Men Origins: Wolverine has earned an impressive sum in its opening week for the theatrical release.

Wolverine earned a whopping £8.56m (AUD $20 million) in the UK alone in its first six days, taking the record as the most lucrative release of 2009.

In Australia, Wolverine earned $6.6 million to end Fast & Furious’s unfortunate reign at the top of the chart.

Meanwhile, notable mentions go to Defiance, the war drama starring Daniel Craig and 17 Again with Zac Efron still placing within the top five.

Box Office Top 10 (week ending 22 April 2009)

The painful-to-watch Fast & Furious predictably takes out first place at the box office this week and is touted to be the highest grossing of the F&F franchise. Even the giddy kiddies jacked up on Easter eggs and the school holiday spirit couldn’t outnumber the F&F devotees who flocked to the premiere last week.

And although not quite achieving the same success as its studio-sibling Shrek, Monsters Vs Aliens still managed to keep Zac Efron’s 17 Again out of the second-top spot despite the hordes of High School Musical fans on term break.

An honourable mention also goes out to Knowing, for being a prime example of how even a terrible film can be propped up at the box office as long as your leading character was once a semi-decent actor.

Box Office Top Ten (week ending 8 April 2009)

The first week of April has had some predictable performances. Monsters vs Aliens has taken the top spot as expected on its opening week and will probably stay there for the next couple due to school holidays.

Nicholas Cage’s dismal Knowing has come out within the top two due to its opening last week but is expected to drop down the ranks once moviegoers realise they’ve seen this somewhere before (Armageddon meets Hurricane meets every other disaster movie).

Race to Witch Mountain is hanging by a thread, as is The Uninvited. We’ll see how Watchmen fares post-Easter.
