Theatre director Caden Cotard (Hoffman) is riding on a wave of success after his most recent production. He decides to move from working with the suburban theatre of Schenectady to tackle the bigger fish: Broadway. After being awarded a MacArthur grant, he plans to create a life-size replica of New York inside a warehouse as part of his new play but finds his life veers widely off track. Determined to bury himself in his work, Caden steadily loses sight of the line between his real life and his production.
