Steven Spielberg has announced his next directing project: the remake of Harvey, Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play and classic 1950s movie starring James Stewart, about a man who befriends a giant invisible rabbit.

Spielberg is apparently “itching” to get behind the camera again after his most recent film, 2008′s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Reports have said that it’ll be a joint production shared between 20th Century Fox and Spielberg’s Dreamworks studio. Novelist Jonathan Tropper has already written the new take on Harvey, and Spielberg aims to start production early next year.

The 1950s film had James Stewart as the protagonist Elwood P Dowd. Dowd’s friendship with a six-foot-tall, invisible bunny has everyone thinking he’s crazy, but the madness that ensues helps heal family rifts and Dowd falls in love.

Many have already stated that they’re worried that the remake will not live up to the already perfect 1950s version. The press release claims that they’re creating a contemporary adaptation of the original Mary Chase play. And to be honest if anyone can improve on perfection, Spielberg can.
