Nicholas Cage’s sci-fi thriller, Knowing, has dominated the US box office by grossing an estimated US $8.9 million from 3,332 showings last Friday.

Knowing has now become the second best opening day for a Summit Entertainment pic following the colossal US $36 million opening day gross from teen vampire romance Twilight in November last year.

Directed by Alex Proyas (I, Robot, Garage Days), Knowing tells the story of a professor who attempts to prevent a global disaster after uncovering a time capsule that contains chilling explanation for past natural disasters and chilling predictions for the future.

Knowing opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday, 26 March.
