Suckerpunch is the latest offering from Zack Snyder, director of 300 and Watchmen. If you’ve seen either of them, then you know what to expect: Things exploding in slow motion. Whizzing bullets just missing the derrière of a young girl, yet coyly lifting the hem of her skirt as it flies by. Which is also in slow motion. Such things are what adolescent dreams are made of.

So, to the plot, to speak of: Suckerpunch tells the story of a young girl, Babydoll (Emily Browning) locked away in a 1950s mental institution against her will. While she is physically imprisoned, her mind is free to roam, and roam it does, in an incredible dreamscape populated by dragons, samurai, WW II trenches, and more.

But Babydoll is not a passive dreamer. She wants to make a break for freedom, and convinces four other girls – the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish)—to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm).

Can they make their way through this explodey, high octane nightmare to emerge at the other end? You’ll just have to go along and find out, as Sucker punch is released 24th March in most cinemas Australia-wide.

Battle: Los Angeles proudly follows a long line of alien invasion movies – Mars Attacks! Independence Day! Skyline! Remember Skyline? Anyone? It only came out a few months ago. I predict this question will be asked about Battle: LA in roughly three months’ time and get the same response.

Battle: LA follows a plucky band of marines trying to repel alien forces in Los Angeles, as the title suggests. The aliens in their sinister ships have invaded the earth. After the rest of the world’s great cities have fallen – Beijing, Paris, London, Kalgoorlie, it’s up to Marine staff Sergeant Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) and his team to draw a line in the sand.

Helping the sergeant shoot aliens from the sky is Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan and Ne-Yo, some kind of R&B star and tragically not an iced biscuit. They have to shoot these alien invaders out of the smoggy LA sky and then presumably shoot them some more.

The trailers for this bang-fest promise explosions and pounding action for 90 minutes. They also promise slightly shonky-looking aliens, hand-held camera work and gruff men making hand signals while urging each other onwards.

I guarantee that if you want a movie where you can happily leave your brain at the door, and let the gunfire massage your eardrums, look no further then Battle: Los Angles, opening 17th March in most cinemas Australia-wide.

For more explodey trailers, head to the movie website at:

Horror movies were cool back in the day. They were scary as hell, made viewers jump in fear, and really gave us an insight into the minds of a psychotic killer, which we all enjoyed to some degree.

But after a few decades we got bored of the standard plots, with similar killings and no real special effects.

That’s why we’re seeing a whole new breed of slashed type horror films being remade in the current era.

The latest to take to the remake able is A Nightmare on Elm Street.

The horror series was one of the most popular releases in the early 80s, and the chain of almost ten titles was a huge hit with the viewers.

Wes Craven was the mastermind behind the originals, but now we are seeing Samuel Bayer take over as head director.

The script will be written by Wesley Strickland Eric Heisserer and will be produced by Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller.

The basic plot is the same as it is for almost any other Nightmare in Elm Street, where a group of suburban teenagers are being haunted in their dreams by the horrible evil character known as Freddy Krueger.

Jackie Earle Haley takes the role as the killer, with support from Rooney Mara, who plays one of the main teens, and Kyle Gallner, who plays Quentin, another main teen.

The movie opened in the states this week, as was welcomed with it being the 12th largest R rating film in the US.

Now, this is the kind of movie you DO NOT want your girlfriend to see.

How to be a Sex Star follows the journey of a man called Nathan Hill.

He is an average looking guy, average in almost all fields of life except for when it comes to picking up girls.

He is a Casanova whose chief occupation is the picking up women.

In the movie, if you could call it that, he juggles five different girls over a series of hilarious dates, all while trying to maintain his reputation by sleeping with the hottest girl in the city.

Now if you have read the book ‘The Game’, this is a movie for you.

It delves into he world of pick up artists, and the mind of females and how to ‘score’.

Bet’s are, if you took your other half to the cinemas with you to watch it, she would either walk out in a fuss, demanding you to go with her, or actually get into it while smirking at all the lines she swears would never work on her.

With equal parts of entertainment, information and controversies, SexStar finally reveals the truth about the games men play to pick up women.

The movie should be out May 1 in cinemas around Australia.

Keep your eye out for it and make sure you find a secret way to watch it!

Robin Hood is as much about a great Hollywood blockbuster movie as it is a return to the big screen for Oscar winner Russell Crowe.

Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by all generations and one that has been the centre of numerous films in the past.

This, the 2010 version of Robin Hood sees the main character travel to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marian (Cate Blanchett).

She is skeptical of the identity and motivations of the man. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marian and salvage the village, Robin assembles a brutal gang who work together to take from the rich, and give to the poor.

Together, they begin preying on the rich upper class civilians to even out the injustices made by the town sheriff.

With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure.

This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

For more information on the movie, head to www.robinhoodthemovie.com

Robin Hood will be released on May 14 in most cinemas around Australia.

Nanny McPhee was a successful film made in 2005. While it did OK at the Box Office, very few thought it would return in the shape of a follow up movie.

However, half a decade later and to the surprise of many movie critics, Mrs. McPhee is back and ready for another attack on the big screens across the world with Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.

The family film is directed by Susanna White and was adapted by Emma Thompson from the popular kids book series, Nurse Matilda.

Thompson continues her role as the main character Nanny McPhee, and the film also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ralph Fiennes, Rhys Ifans, Maggie Smith, Asa Butterfield, Bill Bailey and Katy Brand.

The plot for the new film involves a group of children who are evacuated from the city to a farm during wartime.

Here they bump into the one and only Nanny McPhee and her magic-wielding greatness.

Relying on everything from a flying motorcycle and a statue that comes to life to a tree-climbing piglet and a baby elephant that turns up in the oddest places, Nanny McPhee uses her magic to teach her mischievous charges a bunch of new lessons.

Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang is sure to do well with the younger generation and families around the nation. Apart from that it may struggle to make an impact.

Expect it in cinemas 26th March.

Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio will forever be etched in our minds as the two who brought us the catch cries, ‘Daniel Son’ and ‘Wax on, Wax off”.

Now, however, two decades after its last release, and the franchise is back with another addition.

The Karate Kid is a 2010 movie release that is basically a modified replica of the original.

This time, with the sad news Pat Morita has passed away, martial arts expert Jackie Chan will be assuming the role as Mr. Miyagi, but this time it will be Mr. Han.

And instead of Daniel Larusso, we are introduced to 12 year-old Dre Parker, who is a popular Detroit kid until his mother’s career forces them to relocate overseas to China.

It is here where Dre begins to make enemies, including the class bully, Cheng, who is constantly beating up Dre with his Kung Fu skills.

Dre eventually turns to maintenance man Mr. Han who is secretly a Kung Fu master.

Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, and much in the same vein as the original Karate Kid, the two form a strong bond and go on to bigger and better things together.

While it will never be able to outdo the original, the new Karate Kid does a great job of respecting its previous titles and is definitely a worthwhile movie to watch.

The Karate Kid will be out in Australia later his year.

The Blind Side is the new film by director John Lee Hancock, which is based on true events of an African American homeless schoolboy.

The very first thing that strikes you when you watch the film is the horrible southern accent performed by Sandra Bullock, who somehow received an Ocsar nomination for her poor efforts.

After a while you soon forget about the accent and begin to be hooked into the storyline of a struggling overweight teenager named Michael Oher, who is accepted into a wealthy, warming family who takes him under their wing.

The movie introduces you to Oher when he is accepted into the school under a footballing scholarship. However, he has no place to stay and spends his first nights on the streets before being taken by Leigh Anne Tuohy (Bullock).

After a bit of time, Oher’s grades begin to improve, his happiness increases and he begins to actually enjoy life.

Finally he is allowed to play football, and while he doesn’t perform too well at the beginning, a few inspiring worlds from Tuohy, saying that his teammates are like family, sees him begin to dominate the competition.

For a movie which has not had too much publicity, it has certainly achieved large amounts of success in America, where it is dominating the Box Office.

The word of mouth from the viewers seems to have been working a treat.

However, in my eyes, the film still lacks a bit of style and extra punch, which I think, is needed to take home any Academy Awards.

But overall, still a solid movie.

The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day and The War of the Worlds are all Hollywood blockbusters that focused on the theme of the end of the world.

Now you can add The Road to that list.

The new film is written by the brains behind the successful No Country for Old Men and directed by the highly rated Australian John Hillcoat.

The basic plot of the film resolves around an apocalyptic event that kills off all living existence on the planet earth, well, almost all.

A father and son combo manage to survive the tragic event and embark on a journey to nowhere.

Along their adventures where they hope to find warmth, salvation and human companionship, they find much more.

Firstly they have to fight off the cannibals extremists who have been living off the flesh of survivors since the doomsday hit.

Then they have to come to grips with the fact that the world they once loved will never be the same again.

The Road boasts a star studded line up, including the likes of Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce, Molly Parker and Michael K. Williams to name a few.

While many will be cautious of watching the film purely because of its blockbuster status fear not, there is much more to the film than just heroics, devastations and drama.

There is also the story of a father and son who build an unbreakable relationship through adversity.

The Road is worth a look at your local cinema when it is released next week.

Musical movies have been deteriorating in viewers popularity over the past few years, particularly in contrast to the glory days of the 70s ad 80s.

Luckily for those who love the genre, there is still one man out there ensuring it is not lost to cinema entirely.

His name is Rob Marshall, and in case you are not familiar with his work, he is the director of Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha to name a few.

Marshall is back again this year with his recent Hollywood musical, Nine.

The movie is set in the 1960s and centred on a famous film director named Guido.

Played by Daniel Day-Lewis, Guido is a filmmaker who apparently made a few brilliant movies, then made some bombs, and now he’s working on another one.

His first films were so good that he’s incredibly famous and well-respected, but people find it hard to mention liking his films without mentioning their dislike for his new creations.

Now he finds himself fairly deep in production on his new movie, with costumes being created, test screenings under way, and countless people on the payroll, but he has no script and no idea for one.

He’s married, has a mistress, and has no idea what he’s doing with any part of his life.

We follow along as he pretends to have a movie, runs away from the press, has his affair, and generally drowns in the soulless egomaniac he is.

The storyline for Nine is quite the drama, and when you throw in a few musical songs it really does set the groundwork for a good traditional Hollywood musical.
